Case Study: Medibank My Wellbeing Program

Background

Medibank launched its My Wellbeing program in mid-2008 to its corporate head office staff, with the aim of improving engagement, productivity, and general wellbeing.

The program comprised a 12 month calendar of health & wellbeing activities including risk assessments, seminars and exercise classes.

Challenges

Prior to 2008 a variety of health and wellbeing initiatives were set up within the business, however the program lacked a central point of management and control, meaning activities occurred on an ad hoc basis with limited/no visibility of program participation data.

Twelve months into the program, Medibank engaged Accumulate to help streamline the program, and roll it out more broadly to 1,000 staff across the organisation’s corporate, retail and call centre divisions.

Solution

A dedicated program website was developed, which allowed employees to monitor and manage their participation in the program, and gave Medibank a full suite of reporting options to help track participation and redemption activity.

Reward points would now be awarded to employees based on activity participation rates (weighted according to each activity), and points could be redeemed for items from an expansive online rewards catalogue, once participation targets had been achieved.

In a bid to instil the program as part of business as usual, program communications and updates would be given via multiple channels including the intranet, program emails and team meetings.

Results

Key results from May 2009 – April 2010 were as follows:

Satisfaction & engagement surveys

  • 85% of respondents completed at least 3 activities
  • 79% thought the program helped them achieve their long term health & wellbeing goals
  • 72% redeemed points for rewards within 12 months
  • 98% agreed adding rewards to the program was a good initiative

Comparative health risk assessments  – 2008 vs. 2009/10

  • Improvements were recorded in all 7 key health measurements (e.g. blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, etc.)
  • There was a 20% average increase in employees who knew their key biometric data
  • Medibank maintained employee absenteeism rates and productivity levels during a period of change within the business

“The addition of a rewards program to our employee health and wellbeing program has provided us with significant benefits. We are now able to track participation in the program by both activity type and employee location, and incentivise employees to remain engaged in the program over a greater period of time.

We have also seen uptake in the program from employees who in the past may have considered involvement but not taken the first steps to get involved. The rewards program provides an additional reason for these people to take that step, and as a result we are now reaching a broader range of employees.”
